Description
When Edison brought this phonograph to consumers it started what was to become the Hi Fi era:
• It brought into focus the horizontal & vertical diaphragm cartridge technologies working together.
Edison’s Diamond Discs (horizontal) & newer RCA, Columbia, etc. (vertical) records, on the same player.
• It accommodated the 80 and 78 rpm record speeds, with its fine pitch control.
• It promoted records offering lower surface noise. Chemical supplies available before and after World War I, brought surprisingly good results on the Diamond Discs.
• It offered the first bass, treble, volume control.
• It’s tone arm lever allowed selection of where to lower the cartridge on the record.
The focus changed from selling competing proprietary technologies to providing what the consumer wanted… the enjoyment of re created performances and competing performers.
