On Yonder Rock Reclining on the right side of this Diamond Disc was created by Daniel-François-Esprit Auber and from “Fra Diavolo”. Here it was performed by soprano Marie De Kyser (Kaisar) and tenor Vernon Dalhart (Marion Try Slaughter… the first country singer reported to have sold more than a million copies of a song) and was recorded on September 12, 1917 in New York. Three master copies were created. It was originally recorded January 27, 1913 as performed also by Maria De Kyser and Royal Fish who also made new masters between 6/20/1914 and 6/29/1914. Released in 1917.
This two sided 10″ record is one of the 1/4 inch thick black carbon Edison records, with the earlier etched information instead of a white printed label more common in the 1920’s.
Edison Diamond discs were recorded at 80 rpm using a horizontal diaphragm, so intended it to be played back on an Edison phonograph that also used a horizontal stylus/cartridge which Edison referred to as diamond tipped.
It should not be played on any of the steel tip vertical diaphragm stylus players of that era. They will destroy the up and down modulated groves as they are meant for side to side modulation.
