Pagliacci – Selection, written by Leoncavallo (i.e. Ruggiero Giacomo Maria Giuseppe Emmanuele Raffaele Domenico Vincenzo Francesco Donato Leoncavallo) , that is on the right side of this record, was originally a recording of the American Symphony Orchestra, Edison Orchestra or Edison Concert Band, on February 19th, 1913. The worn label on this disc appears to indicate Edison Orchestra while other sources indicate The American Symphony Orchestra and the later white label discs for 50141 indicate Edison Concert Band while all versions agree on the source as being matrix number 2145 for all three of the original recordings done on that…
Description
This two sided 10″ record is one of the 1/4 inch thick black carbon Edison records, with the earlier etched information instead of a white printed label more common in the 1920’s.
Edison Diamond discs were recorded at 80 rpm using a horizontal diaphragm, so intended it to be played back on an Edison phonograph that also used a horizontal stylus/cartridge which Edison referred to as diamond tipped.
It should not be played on any of the steel tip vertical diaphragm stylus players of that era. They will destroy the up and down modulated groves as they are meant for side to side modulation.
